Summary
Mrs.
Alving is a widow of Captain Alving (died about ten years ago ). She lived in
Western Norway. She has a son, named Oswald, who lived in Europe since 7 years
old. Regina is a maid in Mrs. Alving’s home. Her father is carpenter in Mr.
Alving’s home and his name is Jacob Engstrand. Mrs. Alving has old friend named
Pastor Manders.
The
story began when Regina asked by her father to join in his business in sailor
home, but she rejected it. She hoped by leaving with Mrs. Alving, she can live like the rich
women did. There are many conflict in this drama. One of them is when Regina
and Oswald are falling in love, and Mrs. Alving didn’t allow them because in
fact they are brothers. In another side, Oswald has a big secret which no one
know about it. Then one by one of these
secret is revealed

( he persuade Regina to join in his sailor home but in fact the sailor home is
like prostitution)... Ensgtrand “ but we must have some women in the house; that
is as clear as daylight. Because in the evening we must make the place a little
attractive-some singing and dancing, and that sort of thing....” Page 7
5. Pastor Manders
Kind ( he cares to
his society, he always try to help Mrs. Alving and Regina)
Conflict
- Mrs.
Alving knew that Captain Alving has affair with his maid named Joana, and Regina is the fruit of their
relation.
- The
secret of Mrs. Alving about his husband’s attitude and personality.
- Mrs.
Alving hide the truth of Oswald and Regina from everyone.
- The
burning of the Orphanage, is the cause of Engstrand and Pastor Mander’s
conflict. Engstrand blame Pastor Manders that he is the cause of the
burning, but Pastor Manders denied it.
Ghost
• Oswald supposed that his father’s
life is like a ghost, because he did not know surely about his father
personality. The figure of his father is grey in his mind because his
mother never told clearly. ( page 66
and 68 ).
• About
Oswald’s disease which didn’t tell specificly, like what is the name of the
disease. He had one attack when he was abroad. It passed of quickly and his
daughter called it a kind of softening of the brain or something that short
(act 3 page 71). He also showing a small box that contain Morphia powder to
Mrs. Alving.
